VALE JON NICHOLLS

JON NICHOLLS, OAM

1948 - 2026

Obituary delivered by Andrew Kay.

We honour an extraordinary man — Jon Nicholls OAM — whose vision, drive, and passion helped shape the Australian live performance industry for more than five decades.

Jon’s work spanned every facet of the performing arts. He helped to bring some of the world’s greatest artists to our stages — from Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston to Rowan Atkinson, Elaine Paige, Pam Ayres, Paul Eddington, Clive James, The Chieftains, and many more.

His theatrical productions delighted audiences across the country and beyond, with titles such as The Buddy Holly Story, Piaf, Yes Prime Minister and Steaming. One of his final shows was Oh What a Night — which Jon, with his trademark honesty called Oh What a Nightmare.

For many years Jon served on the Executive Council of Live Performance Australia, lending his wisdom, wit, and fierce commitment to advancing the industry. Jon wasn’t on the Executive Council to just enjoy the sandwiches. With his vast experience and knowledge, Jon had an opinion which he was always prepared to share.

Together with Jan Stoneham and Ross Cunningham, Jon was instrumental in bringing the Helpmann Awards to life. As the Award’s Executive Producer, his leadership, energy, and generosity turned those celebrations into a defining showcase of Australian talent. Jon cared deeply for the Helpmanns, and for the industry they celebrated. His determination to make the Awards great, at times, nearly wore out the LPA team — many of whom had never experienced an old-school theatrical producer in full flight.

In those moments, Jon could be unrelenting and formidable. If he ever felt he’d gone too far, he was always quick to apologise. Those who worked with Jon describe him as a true force of nature — funny, charming, passionate, sometimes fiery, but always guided by his passion for our business. He championed artists, fought for fairness, and never lost his delight in a show well made. It was even better when that show made a profit!

Jon will be remembered with respect, gratitude, and affection. His influence endures through the people he mentored, the memories he created and the art he made possible.

The lights may have dimmed, and the curtain fallen on Jon’s remarkable life, but his legacy will continue to shine brightly in our hearts and across our stages for many years to come.
